Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country were down 0.6% in March 2025

Compared to the previous month, sales fell by 0.3%

Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were down 0.6% compared to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices once corrected for calendar effects. Compared to the previous month (February 2025), sales at constant prices and once corrected for seasonal effects fell by 0.3%.


In year-on-year terms (March 2025 compared to March 2024), the evolution of sales at constant prices was negative in both Food, down 0.7% and Other Products, with a 0.3% decrease.

In month-on-month terms (March 2025 compared to February 2025), sales fell by 0.7% in the Other Products sector and by 0.1% in the Food Sector.

During March of 2025, sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms by 0.2% in the provinces of Bizkaia, Alava and Gipuzkoa, however, they fell by 1.1% and 1.7% respectively.

In month-on-month terms, however, sales rose by 0.3% in Álava and fell by 0.4% in Bizkaia and 0.5% in Gipuzkoa.

Lastly, the number of people employed by large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.4% in comparison with February 2024. In month-on-month terms, the index recorded a rise of 0.1%.

NOTE

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
