Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were down 0.5% in January 2025

Compared to the previous month sales rose by 0.4%

Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were down by 0.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices once corrected for calendar effects. Compared to the previous month (December 2024), sales at constant prices, and once corrected for seasonal effects, rose by 0.4%.

Sales were up 0.9% in month-on-month terms in the Food sector. In contrast, sales in the Other products sector were down 0.5% compared to the previous month. In year-on-year terms (January 2025 compared to January 2024), the evolution of sales at constant prices was negative in both Food, with a 0.4% decrease, and Other Products, down 0.6%.

By province, in January 2025, sales in large stores and food chains decreased in year-on-year terms by 1.5% in Álava, 0.4% in Gipuzkoa and 0.3% in Bizkaia.

Similarly, in month-on-month terms, in Álava sales fell by 0.7%, while in Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, they were up 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively.

Lastly, the number of people employed by large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.5% in comparison with January 2024. In month-on-month terms, the index registered a drop of 0.2%.

NOTE

Due to the introduction of an improved estimation of the total sales deflator, which enables a greater conjunctural adjustment to the effective volume of Food and other products sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country, the gross series of total sales at constant prices has been re-estimated.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
