Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 0.3% in 2024

Food sales increased by 0.6%, whereas sales in Other products decreased by 0.3%

In 2024 as a whole, sales at large stores and food chains registered cumulative growth of 0.3%, according to Eustat data. In the case of the Food sector, sales were up 0.6% compared to the previous year, whereas in the Other Products sector they were down 0.3%.

Cumulative variation over the course of the year was positive in all three provinces: in Álava sales increased by 0.4% compared to 2023, and in both Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia they were up 0.3%.

The index of people employed in the sector showed a cumulative rise of 1.6% in 2024.

Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country were down 0.7% in December 2024 compared to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices once corrected for the appropriate calendar effects. Compared to the previous month (November 2024), sales at constant prices and once corrected for seasonal effects were down 1.6%.

Sales were down 2.2% in month-on-month terms in the Food sector. In the Other products sector, there was a 0.4% decrease in relation to the previous month. In year-on-year terms (December 2024 compared to December 2023), the evolution of sales at constant prices was negative in both Food, with a 1.1% decrease, and Other Products, down 0.1%.

By province, sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms in December 2024 in Álava, up 0.5%. By contrast, in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, sales were down by 1.2% and 0.5%, respectively.

Similarly, in month-on-month terms, in Álava sales rose by 0.2%, while in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, they fell by 2.2% and 1.3% respectively.

Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.1% in comparison with December 2023. In month-on-month terms, the index recorded a rise of 0.2%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
