Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country increased by 2.7% in July 2024

Compared to the previous month, sales were up 1.3%

In July 2024, sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.7% in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices, according to Eustat data.

In relation to June 2024, sales at constant prices increased by 1.3% in July.

Sales increased by 0.9% in month-on-month terms in the Food sector and by 2.2% in the Other products sector. In year-on-year terms, July 2024 compared to July 2023, there was an upturn in sales at constant prices of 3.1% in Food and of 2.1% in Other products.

In July 2024 sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms and at constant prices in all three provinces: by 3.6% in Bizkaia, 2.1% in Gipuzkoa and 0.5% in Álava.

In relation to the previous month (June 2024) sales were up 2.1% in Bizkaia, 1.2% in Álava and 0.1% in Gipuzkoa.

Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.8% compared to July 2023. In month-on-month terms, the index remained unchanged.

Over the cumulative period of the first seven months of 2024, there was a 0.2% increase in sales in the Basque country as a whole. Growth was 0.8% in Gipuzkoa, while there was a 0.1% decrease in Bizkaia. In Álava, however, sales in the first seven months remained at the same level as the cumulative period of the first seven months of the previous year.

In Food, cumulative total sales for the year to date registered a rise of 0.7% while in Other products the cumulative variation decreased by 0.8%.

INFORMATIVE NOTE

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
