Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country fell by 0.9% in March 2024

In the cumulative total for the first quarter, sales were down 0.6% although employee numbers rose by 2.1%

Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 0.9% in March 2024 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

In relation to February 2024, once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices fell by 2.9%.

In the Food sector, sales at constant prices were down 2.7% in month-on-month terms. As regards the Other Products sector, sales fell by 3.1%.

In year-on-year terms, March 2024 compared to March 2023, sales at constant prices rose by 0.3% in Food, whereas in Other Products they fell by 3.2%.

In March 2024 sales at large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms by 2.5% in Gipuzkoa and 1.6% In Álava, while in Bizkaia they decreased by 3.2%, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar.

Lastly, the number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 1.7% in relation to March 2023. In month-on-month terms, the index of people employed remained constant.

In the cumulative total for the first quarter, sales fell by 0.6%. Specifically, Food sales rose by 0.3% and sales of Other Products were down 2.3%. By province, only Bizkaia registered negative data for the cumulative total of sales in the quarter, down 1.8%. There was a cumulative increase of 0.9% in both Álava and Gipuzkoa, all at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar. There was a cumulative increase of 2.1% in the number of people employed.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
