LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. DECEMBER 2023
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were up 0.2% in 2023
Food sector sales increased by 0.5%, while sales of Other Products were down 0.3%
In 2023 as a whole, sales at large stores and food chains registered cumulative growth of 0.2%. In the case of the Food sector, sales were up 0.5%, whereas in the Other Products sector they were down 0.3%, according to Eustat data.
Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 0.3% in December 2023 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to the previous month (November 2023), and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices decreased by 0.5% in December 2023.
Sales in month-on-month terms increased by 0.4% in the Food sector, while sales were down 2.3% in Other Products.
In year-on-year terms, December 2023 compared to December 2022, there was an increase in sales at constant prices of 1.9% in Food and a decrease of 4.2% in Other Products.

Sales in large stores and food chains were up by 1.6% in Álava and 0.4% in Gipuzkoa, in year-on-year terms, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar. However, in Bizkaia sales were down 1.1%.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 1.9% in relation to December 2022. Compared to the previous month, the index of employed people fell by 0.6%.
BALANCE 2023
In 2023 as a whole, sales at large stores and food chains registered cumulative growth of 0.2%. In the case of the Food sector, sales were up 0.5%, whereas in the Other Products sector they were down 0.3%.
The cumulative variation by province was positive in Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia, with increases of 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively. In Álava, however, sales during 2023 were 1.4% lower than in 2022.
Finally, the index of people employed in the sector posted an increase of 3.1% in relation to the previous year.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
