Deaths decreased by 9.4% in the second quarter of 2023 in the Basque Country

The 84 deaths caused by COVID-19 accounted for 1.6% of deaths

In the second quarter of 2023 the number of deaths in the Basque Country stood at 5,245, 9.4% down on the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data. If we compare this data with previous years, we see that in the second quarter of 2023, the number of deaths was lower than in 2022 (5,787), 2021 (5,418) and 2020 (6,073), but higher than in 2019 (5,067) and the average for the 2010-2019 period (4,876).

COVID-19 caused a total of 84 deaths, 277 fewer than in the same quarter of 2022.

Deaths fell in all three territories, with the drop being particularly significant in Álava and Bizkaia: in Álava they decreased by 13.4%, with a total of 686 deceased persons and in Bizkaia by 12.5%, with 2,763 deaths. The decrease in Gipuzkoa was more moderate, at 2.3% and 1,796 deaths. By sex, 2,643 women and 2,602 men died, which was a decrease of 9.8% for women and 9% for men.

Amongst the deaths that occurred in this second quarter, 7 corresponded to children under 1 year of age (0.1%) and 98 to centenarians (1.9%).

The main causes of death were tumours and circulatory system diseases, which caused the deaths of 1,472 and 1,338 individuals respectively, which means that together they accounted for 53.6% of deaths. Diseases of the respiratory system were the third cause of death resulting in 341 deaths. COVID-19 caused 84 deaths (1.6%).

The cause of death continued to vary according to sex. Among men, tumours caused more deaths than diseases of the circulatory system, whilst among women the main cause of death was diseases of the circulatory system, followed by tumours in second place.

Population growth in the Basque Country in the second quarter of 2023 was negative, with a population decrease of 2,040. The population fell in all three provinces: by 1,186 people in Bizkaia, 719 in Gipuzkoa and 135 in Álava.

There were 84 deaths as a result of COVID-19 in the second quarter of 2023

COVID-19 caused a total of 84 deaths, 277 fewer than in the same quarter of 2022. All these deaths were confirmed as being due to COVID-19; there were a further 13 deaths in which COVID-19 was among the certified causes of death, but without being the main cause.

By province, the highest figure corresponded to Bizkaia, with 48, followed by Gipuzkoa with 25 and Álava with 11. As regards the capitals, Bilbao stands out with 14 deaths caused by COVID-19, followed by San Sebastián with 10 and Vitoria-Gasteiz with 4. Other notable municipalities were Barakaldo and Basuri with 4 deaths each due to COVID-19.

The number of deaths of women (47) exceeded those of men (37), while, by age, the most affected group was those aged over 80 years old, accounting for 78.6% of deaths due to COVID-19 (66 deaths).

The majority of these deaths occurred in Basque hospitals (85.6%, 79% in the second quarter of 2022), followed by residential care homes (10.7%, 11.6% in the second quarter of 2022) and at home (3.5%, 9.4% in the second quarter of 2022).
