Sales in the Trade sector in the Basque Country were down 3.0% in the second quarter of 2023
Compared to the previous quarter, the decrease was 1.5%
In the second quarter of 2023 sales in the Trade sector, which encompasses Wholesale Trade, Retail Trade, and Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles, were down 3.0% in year-on-year terms, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects, according to Eustat data.
Compared to the previous quarter and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales fell by 1.5% in the second quarter of 2023.
Within Trade, the year-on-year evolution in sales was positive in both the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles sector, with growth of 3.0%, and the Retail Trade sector, where sales were 1.1% higher than in the second quarter of the previous year. In contrast, in the Wholesale trade sector, sales were 6.9% lower than those seen in the second quarter of 2022, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects.
In relation to the previous quarter, once corrected for seasonal effects, there was a downturn in both Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles and Wholesale Trade, with quarter-on-quarter decreases of 2.0% and 1.9%, respectively. In contrast, sales in the Retail Trade sub-sector rose by 0.5% in relation to the previous quarter.

By province, in the Trade sector as a whole, sales in Álava and Bizkaia decreased in year-on-year terms at constant prices by 5.3% and 4.3%, respectively. In the case of Gipuzkoa, however, sales increased by 0.5%.
In relation to the first quarter of 2023, sales fell by 3.3% in Álava and by 2.2% in Bizkaia. In Gipuzkoa, in contrast, there was a quarter-on-quarter rise in sales of 0.6%.
The index of people employed in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 1.4% in the second quarter of 2023 in relation to the second quarter of 2022. With respect to the first quarter of the year, growth stood at 0.3%.
