Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were up 0.4% in May 2023

The Food index registered a rise of 2.4%, while that of Other Products fell by 3.3%

Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered an increase of 0.4% in May 2023 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous month, April 2023, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices rose by 0.9% in May 2023.

Sales in month-on-month terms increased by 2.4% in the Food sector, while sales were down 1.9% in Other Products.

In year-on-year terms, May 2023 compared to May 2022, the evolution of sales at constant prices was positive in the Food sector, with an increase of 2.4%. However, in Other Products the results were negative, with a decrease in sales of 3.3% in relation to May of the previous year.

Sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms by 2.0% in Gipuzkoa, in Bizkaia they remained at the same level as in May 2022 and, finally, in Álava sales experienced a downturn of 1.1%, all at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar.

In relation to the previous month, April 2023, all three provinces saw an increase in sales. Sales were up 1.5% in quarter-on-quarter terms in Álava, and in both Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa sales increased by 0.8%.

The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 3.9% in relation to May 2022. Compared to the previous month, the index of employed people fell by 0.4%.

NOTE

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
