Sales in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 0.3% in the first quarter of 2023
With regard to the previous quarter, the increase was also 0.3%
In the first quarter of 2023 sales in the Trade sector, which encompasses Wholesale Trade, Retail Trade, and Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles , increased by 0.3% in year-on-year terms, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects, according to Eustat data.
Compared to the previous quarter and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales also increased by 0.3% in the first quarter of 2023.
Within Trade, the year-on-year evolution in sales was positive in both the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles sector, with growth of 1.9%, and the Retail Trade sector, where sales were 1.7% higher than in the first quarter of the previous year. In contrast, in the Wholesale trade sector, sales were 0.9% lower than those seen in the first quarter of 2022, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects.
In relation to the previous quarter, once corrected for seasonal effects, there was an increase in both Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles and Retail Trade, with quarter-on-quarter growth of 3.8% and 0.6%, respectively. In the Wholesale Trade sub-sector, however, sales fell by 0.3% compared to the previous quarter.

By province, in the Trade sector as a whole, sales increased in year-on-year terms at constant prices by 1.5% and 0.9% in Bizkaia and Álava respectively. In contrast, sales in Gipuzkoa were down 1.9%.
In relation to the fourth quarter of 2022, sales increased by 1.0% in Álava and by 0.3% in Bizkaia. In Gipuzkoa, however, there was a quarter-on-quarter decrease of 0.2%.
The index of people employed in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 1.0% in the first quarter of 2023 in relation to the first quarter of 2022. With respect to the fourth quarter of the previous year, growth stood at 0.1%.
