LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. APRIL 2023

Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country were down 0.3% in April 2023

However, compared to the previous month, sales were up 1.4%

Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 0.3% in April 2023, in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous month, March 2023, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices rose by 1.4% in April. Sales increased in month-on-month terms, in both the Food and Other products sectors, by 1.9% and 0.5% respectively.

In year-on-year terms (April 2023 compared to April 2022), the evolutions of sales at constant prices was positive in the Food sector, with an increase of 0.1%. However, the results were negative in Other Products, with a 1.0% drop in sales in relation to sales in April of the previous year.

Large stores and food chains sales increased in year-on-year terms by 0.4% in Gipuzkoa and 0.2% in Bizkaia, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar. In contrast, in the province of Álava there was a year-on-year downturn in sales of 3.7%.

In relation to the previous quarter, March 2023, all three provinces saw an increase in sales. In quarter-on-quarter terms, sales rose by 1.9% in Gipuzkoa, 1.2% in Álava and 1.1% in Bizkaia.

The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 4.6% in relation to April 2022. Compared to the previous month, March 2023, the index of employed people fell by 0.4%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
