SERVICE SECTOR INDEX. OTHER MARKET SERVICES. I/2023
Sales in the Market Services sector in the Basque Country rose by 9.8% in the first quarter of 2023
Compared to the previous quarter, sales increased by 1.6%
Sales in the Other Market Services sector in the Basque Country rose by 9.8% in the first quarter of 2023 in relation to the same quarter of the previous year, at constant prices and once calendar effects had been eliminated, according to Eustat data. This sector includes the services offered by the sectors of Transport, Hospitality, Information & Communications and Corporate Services Activities.
Compared to the previous quarter, at constant prices and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales increased by 1.6% in the first quarter of 2023.
Within the Other Market Services sector, the year-on-year recovery in real sales (at constant prices) was generalised. Growth reached 19.4% in Transport and Storage; 5.9% in Hospitality; 5.4% in Administrative Activities and Auxiliary Services; 4.0% in Information & Communications; and, finally, sales in Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities increased by 2.4% in relation to the same quarter of the previous year.
Comparing the first quarter of 2023 with the fourth quarter of 2022, a positive performance in sales was observed in all sectors. Thus, in the Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities sector sales increased in quarter-on-quarter terms by 2,8%; in Hospitality by 2,6%; in Administrative Activities and Auxiliary Services by 2.3%; in Information & Communications by 2.1%; and, finally, in Transport and storage sales were 0.6% higher than in the final quarter of 2022.

By province, in Gipuzkoa there was a 16.7% year-on-year increase in the sales index, in Álava it was up 12.4% and in Bizkaia it rose by 5.8%. As regards the quarter-on-quarter evolution, growth was observed in all provinces, standing at 4.4% in Álava, 2.0% in Gipuzkoa and 0.8% in Bizkaia.
The index of people employed in these services as a whole for the Basque Country showed no variation in respect of the first quarter of 2022. However, in relation to the previous quarter there was an increase of 0.2%.
