Marriages in the Basque Country increased by 3.1% in the fourth quarter of 2022
In the year as a whole, marriages rose by 20.6% in respect of 2021 and by 3.7% in respect of 2019
In the fourth quarter of 2022 the figure for marriages in the Basque Country stood at 1,634, which was an increase of 3.1% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, according to Eustat data.
The number of marriages registered increased by 14.2% (556) in Gipukzoa, and by 1.3% (779) in Bizkaia, however, in Álava there were 199 fewer marriages, down 14.2%. Meanwhile, 100 marriages, in which at least one of the spouses is a Basque Country resident were registered elsewhere.
Of the total number of marriages, 1,578 were heterosexual marriages and 56 were between people of the same sex, 36 between women and 20 between men.
During the fourth quarter of 2022, 9 out of 10 weddings were civil, 91.6%. This percentage was 91.3% in the same quarter of 2021.
Of the 1,634 marriages in the fourth quarter of 2022, 1,537 women and 1,507 men resident in the Basque Country got married. For 1,254 wives (81.6%) this was their first marriage, 8 were widows and 275 were divorcees. As regards the husbands, for 1,198 (79.5%) this was their first marriage, whilst 10 widowers and 299 divorcees remarried.
With respect to the distribution according to the age of the couple, 84.6% of husbands and 92.3% of wives were over 30. In the same period of 2021, this percentage was 84.5% for women and 91.4% for men.
In the fourth quarter of 2022, 23.2% of recently married women and 16.3% of recently married men were foreign nationals. In respect of the same quarter of the previous year, this percentage increased by 0.4 percentage points among women and decreased by 0.1 among men.
BALANCE FOR 2022
In the provisional data for 2022, the number of marriages for individuals resident in the Basque Country stood at 7,748, which represented a rise of 20.6% in respect of the previous year. In respect of 2019 the number of marriages increased by 3.7%.
The percentage of civil marriages was 90.1%, slightly below the 90.6% in 2021.
In 2022 as a whole, 18.2% of new wives and 10.7% of new husbands were foreign nationals. In 2021 these percentages were 18.2% and 12.9%, respectively.
