Sales in large store and food chains in the Basque Country were up 2.2% in January 2023

Compared to the previous month, December 2022, sales rose by 2.8%

Sales in large store and food chains in the Basque Country registered an increase of 2.2% in January 2023 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

In relation to December 2022, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices rose by 2.8% during January.

In the Food sector, sales at constant prices grew by 3.9% in month-on-month terms. In the Other products sector, sales were up 0.9% in relation to the previous month.

In year-on-year terms, January 2023 compared to January 2022, the evolution of sales at constant prices was negative in Food, with a decrease of 1.1%, while in Other Products sales were 8.1% higher than in the same month of the previous year.

In January 2023, sales at large stores and food chains in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa increased year-on-year terms by 4.2% and 0.1%, respectively. In contrast, in the case of Álava, sales fell by 1.0% at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar.

Compared to December 2022 (i.e. in month-on-month terms), sales rose in all three provinces: by 4.4% in Gipuzkoa, 2.7% in Álava and 2.0% in Bizkaia, at constant prices and once corrected for seasonal effects.

The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 3.6% in relation to January 2022. In month-on-month terms, however, the index of people employed rose by 0.5%.

NOTE

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
