SERVICE SECTOR INDEX. OTHER MARKET SERVICES. IV/2022
Sales in the Market services sector in the Basque Country rose by 11.4% in 2022 as a whole
This growth was led by the Hospitality (23.2%) and Transport & Storage (18.3%) sectors
In 2022 as a whole, sales in the Other market services sector increased by 11.4% at constant prices in relation to 2021, according to Eustat data.
Evolution for the year as a whole was positive in all sectors except Professional, scientific and technical activities, where sales for 2022 as a whole were 1.6% lower than those recorded in 2021.
Among the sectors with positive results throughout the year, Hospitality and Transport & Storage stand out, with annual growth of 23.2% and 18.3% respectively. Sales also increased in 2022 in the Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services and Information & Communications sectors, by 8.1% and 4.6% respectively.
Taking into account that observed in the fourth quarter of 2022, sales in the Other market services sector in the Basque Country increased by 8.2% in relation to the same quarter of the previous year, at constant prices and once calendar effects had been eliminated.
Compared to the previous quarter, at constant prices and once corrected for seasonal effects, there was a 2.3% increase in sales.
Within the Other Market Services sector, the year-on-year recovery in real sales (at constant prices) in the final quarter of the year was due to the performance of Transport & Storage, where sales rose by 23.4% and, to a lesser extent, Hospitality, where sales were up 3.6%. In the Professional, scientific and technical activities sector, sales decreased in year-on-year terms by 1.5% in the fourth quarter of the year; sales were down 0.3% in Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services; and, finally, sales fell by 0.1% in Information & Communications.
Compared to the third quarter of 2022, the decrease in Sales was widespread, with the exception of Transport & Storage, where sales rose by 9.3%. In the Professional, scientific and technical activities sector the quarter-on-quarter decrease was 1.7%; in Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services, sales fell by 1.5%, and lastly, in the Hospitality and Information & Communications sectors, sales were down 1.4% in both cases.

By province, there was a year-on-year increase in the sales index of 13.7% in Gipuzkoa, 6.4% in Álava and 5.9% in Bizkaia.
With respect to the previous quarter, the increase in sales was also widespread, given that sales were 5.0% higher than the previous quarter in Gipuzkoa, increased by 2.1% in Álava and, lastly, were up 0.8% in Bizkaia.
The index of people employed in these services as a whole for the Basque Country fell in the fourth quarter of 2022 by 1.1% in year-on-year terms and 0.3% in quarter-on-quarter terms.
