LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. DECEMBER 2022
Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country were down 1.8% in December 2022
In relation to November 2022, sales increased by 0.3%
Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 1.8% in December 2022 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
In relation to the previous month, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices were up 0.3% in December.
In the food sector, sales at constant prices decreased in month-on-month terms by 2.2%, whereas in other products there was a 4.9% increase in relation to November 2022.
In year-on-year terms, December 2022 compared to December 2021, the evolution of sales at constant prices was also negative in the food sector, with a 7.0% decrease, while in other products sales were 8.9% higher than the same month of the previous year.

In December 2022, sales at large stores and food chains decreased in year-on-year terms in the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Álava, by 6.2% and 5.9% respectively. However, in Bizkaia, sales increased by 1.6% at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar.
Compared to November 2022, i.e. in month-on-month terms, sales were also down in Gipuzkoa and Álava, by 2.2% and 1.4% respectively, while in Álava they increased by 2.1%, once corrected for calendar effects and at constant prices.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 4.1% compared to December 2021. In month-on-month terms, however, the index of employed people was down 0.4%.
BALANCE FOR 2022
In 2022 as a whole, the drop in the sales index in large stores and food chains compared to 2021 was 1.3%. This decrease was a result of the 4.8% drop in annual sales in food, since annual sales in other products rose by 5.6%.
The annual variation in sales for 2022 was negative in Álava and Gipuzkoa, with annual decreases of 3.4% and 3.1% respectively. In Bizkaia, sales in 2022 as a whole increased by 0.2% in relation to sales in 2021.
Finally, the index of people employed in the sector showed an annual increase of 2.7%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
