LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. NOVEMBER 2022
Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country were down 3.6% in November 2022
In relation to October 2022, sales fell by 1.0%
Large store and food chain sales in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 3.6% in November 2022 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
In relation to the previous month, and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales at constant prices were down 1.0% in November.
In the food sector, sales at constant prices decreased in month-on-month terms by 0.8% and for other products, there was a 1.3% drop in relation to October 2022.
In year-on-year terms (November 2022 compared to November 2021), the evolution of sales at constant prices was negative in both sectors. Thus, food sales fell by 4.7% and sales of other products were down 1.7%.

In November 2022, large store and food chain sales decreased in all three provinces in year-on-year terms: by 5.5% in Álava, by 4.6% in Gipuzkoa and 2.6% in Bizkaia, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar.
Compared to October 2022, i.e. in month-on-month terms, sales were down in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa by 1.3% and 0.8% respectively, while in Álava they remained stable (0.0%), once corrected for calendar effects and at constant prices.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 5.2% compared to November 2021. In month-on-month terms, however, the index of employed people was down 0.1%.
BALANCE FOR THE FIRST ELEVEN MONTHS OF 2022
In the first eleven months of 2022 as a whole, the drop in the sales index in large stores and food chains stood at 1.5%. This decrease was a result of the 4.7% drop in cumulative sales in Food, given that cumulative sales up to the month of November rose by 5.2% in Other Products.
The cumulative variation in sales this year to date was negative in all three provinces. Sales were down 3.2% in Álava, 2.9% in Gipuzkoa and 0.2% in Bizkaia.
The index of people employed in the sector showed a cumulative rise of 2.7% in the first eleven months of the year.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects, and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
