MARRIAGE STATISTICS. II/2022
There were 2,271 marriages in the second quarter of 2022, up 24.8% on the previous year
93% of husbands and 86.8% of wives were over the age of 30
The number of marriages in the Basque Country during the second quarter of 2022 rose to 2,271, which was 24.8% more than in the same quarter of the previous year (1,820), according to Eustat data. Comparing data from this quarter with that from the same quarter of 2019 reveals a 4.5% rise in the number of marriages. This data indicates that marriages postponed in the past two years are now taking place. Of the total number of marriages, 2,212 were heterosexual marriages and the other 59 were between people of the same sex, 36 between women and 23 between men.
Taking into account the province where the marriage was registered, all three provinces saw an increase in the number of marriages: there were 1,037 weddings in Bizkaia, 268 in Álava and 818 in Gipuzkoa. On the other hand, 148 marriages were registered outside the Basque Country.
As is common in the second quarter, the number of unions rose considerably, above all in the month of June, which saw 44.9% of the weddings celebrated in the quarter.
During the Spring months of 2022, the percentage of civil weddings was 91.2%, 88.2% corresponded to opposite sex couples and 2.6% of the total number of marriages were between same sex couples, all of which were civil. In 2022 this percentage was 1.2 points lower than that observed in the same quarter of 2021.
Of the 2,271 marriages in the second quarter of 2022, 2,103 men and 2,129 women resident in the Basque Country married. For 1,741 husbands (82.8%) this was their first marriage, whilst 28 widowers and 334 divorcees remarried. The percentage of first weddings for women was higher than that for men: the number of single women who married stood at 1,793 (84.2%), 14 widows and 322 divorcees.
The percentage of foreign nationals entering into marriage decreased
With respect to the distribution according to the age of the couple, 93% of husbands and 86.8% of wives were over 30. In the same period of 2021, this proportion was 91% for men and 85.6% for women.
In the months of April, May and June 2022, 11.5% of recently married men and 16.2% of recently married women were foreign nationals. In respect of the same quarter of the previous year, this percentage fell by 0.5 percentage points among men and 1.1 among women.
