Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were up 1.7% in August 2022

In relation to July, sales rose by 2.3%

Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered an increase of 1.7% in August 2022 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

In relation to July 2022, the evolution of sales at constant prices was also positive, with an increase of 2.3% in deseasonalised terms.

Comparing the indexes obtained by sectors with those of the previous month, the increase at constant prices can be observed both in Food and in Other Products, up 2.0% and 3.1%, respectively.

In year-on-year terms, August 2022 compared August 2021, the evolution of sales at constant prices was negative in Food, down 0.1%. In contrast, the evolution of sales in Other Products was positive, up 5.0% on those observed in August of the previous year.

By province, in August 2022 sales in large stores and food chains increased in year-on-year terms in all three provinces. Sales were up 2.4% in Gipuzkoa, 1.7% in Álava and 1.2% in Bizkaia. In relation to July 2022, sales also increased in the three provinces: by 3.1% in Álava and by 2.2% in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa.

The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.9% in relation to August 2021. In month-on-month terms, the index of employed people was up 0.3%.

BALANCE FOR THE FIRST EIGHT MONTHS OF 2022

In the first eight months of 2022 as a whole, the drop in the sales index in large stores and food chains stood at 1.3%. This decrease is a result of the 5.1% drop in cumulative sales in Food, given that cumulative sales up to the month of August rose by 6.8% in Other Products.

The cumulative variation for the year to date was negative in all three provinces: in Gipuzkoa and Álava it stood at 2.7% and in Bizkaia at 0.1%.

Finally, the index of people employed in the sector showed a cumulative increase of 2.0% in the first eight months of the year.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
