LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. JUNE 2022
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were down 2.0% in June 2022
In the cumulative total for the quarter sales fell by 1.2%
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 2.0% in June 2022 in relation to the same month of 2021, at constant prices and in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
In relation to May 2022, the evolution of sales at constant prices was also negative, with a decrease of 2.2% in deseasonalised terms.
In the month-on-month comparison, the food sector and that of other products performed differently. Compared to May 2022, sales of food products were up 0.7%, whilst those of other products were down 7.4%, all in deseasonalised terms at constant prices.
In relation to the year-on-year variation, June 2021, the evolution of sales at constant prices, in the two sectors, showed a downward trend; in the food sector with a decrease of 2.9% and in that of other products, to a lesser degree, with a drop of 0.2%.

By province, sales in large stores and food chains in respect of the previous year were down 4.7% in Gipuzkoa, 2.3% in Álava and, finally, by 0.4% in Bizkaia.
In relation to the previous month, May 2022, there was a downward trend in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa with sales down 3.5% and 1.1%, respectively In contrast, in the same period, Álava registered a positive variation in sales of 0.5%.
In the cumulative total for the first quarter of 2022, the drop in the Sales index in large stores and food chains stood at 1.2%, determined by the 5.6% decrease in cumulative sales of food products, given that cumulative sales up to June of other products rose by 8.5%.
As regards the cumulative variation for the year to date at the provincial level, in the case of Bizkaia sales were positive (0.5%) in relation to the first quarter of the previous year. Gipuzkoa and Álava performed differently, reflecting a drop in sales for the same period of 3.5% and 2.7%, respectively.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country had a positive variation of 0.4%, compared to June 2021. There was also an increase in the month-on-month variation, May 2022, of 0.9%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
