LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. JULY 2022
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country fell by 5.2% in July 2022
Compared to the month of June, sales were down 1.5%
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 5.2% in July 2022 in relation to the same month of the previous year, at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
In relation to June 2022, the evolution of sales at constant prices was also negative, with a decrease of 1.5% in deseasonalised terms.
Comparing the indexes obtained by sectors with those of the previous month, a drop in constant prices can be observed in food, down 1.2%, and other products, which fell by 2.0%.
In year-on-year terms, July 2022 compared to July 2021, the evolution of sales at constant prices was also negative in both sectors: 6.8% less in food and 2.2% in other products.

By province, in July 2022 sales in large stores and food chains in respect of the previous year were down 6.4% in Álava, 5.1% in Gipuzkoa and, finally, by 4.8% in Bizkaia.
BALANCE FOR THE FIRST SEVEN MONTHS OF 2022
Across the first seven months of 2022, the drop in the sales index in large stores and food chains stood at 1.7%. This decrease is a result of the 5.7% fall in accumulated sales in food, as the accumulated sales up to the month of July increased by 7.1% in other products.
The accumulated variation for the year to date was negative across all three provinces: Gipuzkoa stood at 3.5%, Álava at 3.2% and finally, Bizkaia at 0.2%.
The number of individuals employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 0.2% in relation to July 2021. In month-on-month terms, the index of employed people was up 0.5%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
