STATISTICS ON SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT - R&D ACTIVITIES. Advance data. 2021
Expenditure on R&D in 2021 increased by 10.4% in the Basque Country
R&D personnel in full-time equivalent positions, for its part, rose by 6.7%
In 2021, expenditure on Scientific Research and Technological Development activities (R&D) reported 10.4% growth in the Basque Country, according to provisional data provided by Eustat. Similarly, R&D personnel in full-time equivalent positions rose by 6.7%.
These expenditure and R&D personnel figures are based on the performance of their implementation sectors:
The main sector, business, was up 11.5% in expenditure and 8.3% in personnel for R&D activities.
In Higher Education, expenditure increased by 3.2% and R&D personnel rose by 1.7%.
Lastly, in the Public Administration sector, 18.7% growth was reported in expenditure and 11.3% in R&D personnel.

In relation to GDP, expenditure on internal R&D in the Basque Country rose from 2.08% in 2020 to 2.13% in 2021.
Methodological note:
Eustat has produced Advance Data on the evolution of expenditure and R&D personnel in 2021. In order to do this, companies, Higher Education bodies and public administration that together represent 89.6% of the total expenditure obtained the previous year have been considered, allowing an advance of the results that will be presented in a definitive form in November of this year to be brought forward to July.
