Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 0.1% in May 2022

In relation to the previous month, the trend was also positive (0.8%)

Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered an increase of 0.1% in May 2022 in relation to the same month of 2021, at constant prices and in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.

In contrast, in relation to April 2022, the evolution of sales at constant prices was positive, with an increase of 0.8% in deseasonalised terms.

There were contrasts in the year-on-year comparison as regards performance between the food sector and that of other products. Compared to May 2021, sales of food products were down 4.7%, whilst those of other products were up by 10.7% in constant terms.

In relation to the previous month, April 2022, evolution was also different by sector, with a 1.5% decrease in sales at constant prices and a 2.1% growth in sales of food products.

Sales in large stores and food chains in respect of the previous year were down 3.7% in Álava, and 2.6% in Gipuzkoa, whereas sales increased by 2.7% in Bizkaia. Compared to the previous month, the trend was positive in all the provinces: Gipuzkoa 1.1%, Bizkaia 0.8% and Álava 0.3%.

In the cumulative total of the first five months of 2022, the drop in the Sales index in large stores and food chains stood at 1.1%, determined by the 6.1% decrease in cumulative sales in food, given that cumulative sales up to May rose by 10.5% in other products.

By province, the cumulative variation for the year to date was positive in the case of Bizkaia, with sales 0.6% higher than in the same cumulative period of the previous year. However, in Álava and Gipuzkoa, sales in the first five months of the year were down 2.8% and 3.2%, respectively.

The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country remained unchanged in relation to the same month of the previous year (0.0%). As regards to the previous month, April 2022, employment increased by 0.3%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
