Sales in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 5.3% in the first quarter of 2022
Compared to the previous quarter, Trade increased by 1.9%
In the first quarter of 2022 sales in the Trade sector, which encompasses Wholesale Trade, Retail Trade, and Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles , increased by 5.3% in year-on-year terms, at constant prices and once corrected for calendar effects, according to Eustat data.
Compared to the previous quarter and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales increased by 1.9% in the first quarter of 2022.
Within Trade, the year-on-year evolution in real sales was positive in the branches of Wholesale Trade (7.8%) and Retail Trade (4.9%), whereas in Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles it was negative (-7.3%).
In relation to the previous quarter, sales recovered by 1.4% in Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles; by 1.2% in Retail Trade; and by 1.0% in Wholesale Trade.

By province, in the first quarter of 2022, in Bizkaia there was a drop in sales in year-on-year terms in the Trade sector of 5.8%, Gipuzkoa saw a decrease of 5.5%, and in Álava sales fell by 3.5%.
In respect of the fourth quarter of 2021, the evolution was also positive. In Bizkaia sales increased by 2.0% in year-on-year terms, in Álava by 1.9% and, finally, in Gipuzkoa, they were up 1.7%.
The index of people employed in the Trade sector in the Basque Country rose by 2.7% in the first quarter of 2022 in relation to the first quarter of 2021. In respect of the fourth quarter of 2021, the increase stood at 0.4%.

Included as persons employed considered in this and other short-term indices, are those covered by an ERTE (Temporary Labour Force Adjustment Plan), following the definition of persons employed indicated by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) in its manual Methodology of Short Term Business Statistics.
