Retail sector sales in the Basque Country were up 4.9% in the first quarter of 2022
With regard to the previous quarter, the increase stood at 1.2%
Sales in the retail sector in the Basque Country increased by 4.9% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the same quarter of the previous year, once corrected for calendar effects and at constant prices, according to Eustat data. Sales in the sector, excluding service stations, increased by 5.4% in relation to the first quarter of 2021.
Compared to the previous quarter, and once any seasonal effects had been eliminated, the sales index in the first quarter of 2022 rose by 1.2%.
By sectors, in relation to the first quarter of 2021, sales at constant prices in Other Products, excluding food, rose by 11.5% during the first quarter of 2022. In contrast, in the same terms, Food sales were down 0.7% and sales of Automotive Fuel fell by 1.8%.
Compared to the fourth quarter of 2021, in deseasonalised terms and at constant prices, sales in Food and in Other Products rose by 0.2% and 1.8%, respectively. However, sales in Automotive Fuel were down 1.4%.

Within the Food retail trade, Specialised trade in food, beverages and tobacco (establishments such as greengrocers, butchers and fishmongers) increased by 3.3% in relation to the first quarter of 2021. By contrast, retail trade that is Non-specialised with food, beverages and tobacco predominating (primarily supermarkets and hypermarkets), decreased by 2.5%.
In the retail trade of Other Products, the evolution of sales in the first quarter of 2022 in relation to the same quarter of the previous year was not homogeneous. Thus, Specialised trade in household goods which includes, among others, domestic appliances, furniture and telecommunications equipment, rose by 27.7% and Retail trade specialising in personal equipment was up 11.7%. In contrast, sales of products included in Non-specialised retail trade with other products predominating and in Specialised trade in other consumer goods, were down 8.3% and 4.5%, respectively.
By province, the sales index for the first quarter of 2022 registered a year-on-year increase of 9.5% in Gipuzkoa and 3.9% in Bizkaia; however, in Álava sales were down 0.7% in year-on-year terms. In quarter-on-quarter terms, the evolution of sales was positive in all the provinces, with an increase of 1.8% in Gipuzkoa, of 1.2% in Álava and of 0.9% in Bizkaia.
The number of people employed in the retail trade sector in the Basque Country as a whole in the first quarter of 2022 rose by 3.8% in relation to the first quarter of the previous year. In respect of the fourth quarter of 2021, the increase stood at 0.4%.
