LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. APRIL 2022
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country were down 2.3% in April 2022
However, compared to the previous month, sales were up 1.8%
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered a downturn of 2.3% April 2022 in relation to the same month of 2021, at constant prices and in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
In contrast, in relation to March 2022, the evolution of sales at constant prices was positive, with an increase of 1.8% in deseasonalised terms.
In the year-on-year comparison in the food sector and in that of other products, there were positive and negative variations in performance, Sales of food products were down 9.6% in relation to April 2021, whereas sales of other products increased by 15.5%, all in constant terms.
In relation to the previous month, March 2022, evolution was also different by sector, with a 2.5% decrease in food sales and 10.2% growth in sales of other products.

Sales in large stores and food chains in respect of the previous year were down 5.6% in Álava, 4.0% in Gipuzkoa and 0.5% in Bizkaia. In relation to the previous month, sales at constant prices were up 4.5% in Bizkaia, whereas in Álava and Gipuzkoa they were down 1.1% and 1.5%, respectively.
In the cumulative total of the first four months of 2022, the drop in the Sales index in large stores and food chains stood at 1.3%, determined by the 6.4% decrease in cumulative sales in food, given that cumulative sales until April rose by 10.4% in other products.
By province, the cumulative variation for the year to date was positive in the case of Bizkaia, with sales 0.1% higher than in the same cumulative period of the previous year. However, in Álava and Gipuzkoa, sales in the first four months of the year were down 2.6% and 3.3%, respectively.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.0% in April 2022 in relation to the same month of the previous year. As regards the previous month, March 2022, employment increased by 0.4%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
