LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. FEBRUARY 2022
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 2.9% February 2022
Compared to January 2022 sales were up 0.1%
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered an increase of 2.9% February 2022 in relation to the same month of 2021, at constant prices and in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
The evolution of sales at constant prices was also positive in relation January 2022, with an increase of 0.1% in deseasonalised terms.
The year-on-year performance of sales was not homogeneous by sector. Sales of food products were down 5.2% in relation to February 2021, whereas sales of other products increased by 24.3%.
In relation to January 2022, the trend was also different by sector, with a 1.0% decrease in food sales and 2.5% growth in sales of other products.

In February 2022 the evolution of sales in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa showed a year-on-year increase of 5.3% and 2.6%, respectively; in contrast, in Álava sales were down 4.9% on those registered in the same month of the previous year.
In the cumulative total for January and February 2022, the sales index in large stores and food chains rose by 0.9% due to the cumulative increase of 14.1% in sales of other products, given that food sales were down 4.9% on those observed in the same cumulative period of the previous year.
By province, the cumulative variation for the year to date was positive in the case of Bizkaia, with sales 3.3% higher than in the same cumulative period of the previous year. However, in Álava and Gipuzkoa sales in the first two months of the year were down 4.2% and 0.7%, respectively.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 4.4% in February 2022 in relation to the same month of the previous year. As regards the previous month, January 2022, employment fell by 0.4%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
Included as persons employed considered in this and other short-term indices, are those covered by an ERTE (Temporary Labour Force Adjustment Plan), following the definition of persons employed indicated by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) in its manual Methodology of Short Term Business Statistics.
