LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX. JANUARY 2022
Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country increased by 1.1% in January 2022
Compared to December 2021 sales were up 0.9%
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country registered an increase of 1.1% in January 2022 in relation to the same month of 2021, at constant prices and in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data.
The evolution of sales at constant prices was also positive in relation to December 2021, with an increase of 0.9% in deseasonalised terms.
The year-on-year performance of sales was not homogeneous by sector. Sales of food products were down 1.7% in relation to January 2021, whereas sales of other products increased by 6.9% in year-on-year terms during January 2022.
In relation to December 2021, in deseasonalised terms, the trend was positive in both sectors, with an increase of 1.3% in food sales and 0.2% in sales of other products, at constant prices.

The evolution of sales in Bizkaia showed a year-on-year increase of 5.0%, whereas in both Álava and Gipuzkoa sales observed in January 2022 were 3.4% down on those registered in the same month of the previous year.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 5.0% in January 2022 compared to the same month of the previous year. In relation to the previous month December 2021, employment increased by 1.6%.

Year-on-year variations are calculated using the series corrected for calendar effects and the month-on-month variations are calculated using the deseasonalised series.
Included as persons employed considered in this and other short-term indices, are those covered by an ERTE (Temporary Labour Force Adjustment Plan), following the definition of persons employed indicated by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) in its manual Methodology of Short Term Business Statistics.
