SERVICE SECTOR INDEX. OTHER MARKET SERVICES. III/2021
Sales in the market services sector in the Basque Country in the third quarter of 2021 showed a year-on-year increase of 9.4%
In the year-to-date, cumulative year-on-year growth reached 7.8%
Sales in the Other Market Services sector in the Basque Country rose by 9.4% in the third quarter of 2021 in relation to the same quarter of 2020 at constant prices and once calendar effects had been eliminated, according to Eustat data. This sector includes the services offered by the sectors of Hospitality, Transport & Storage, Information & Communications and Corporate Services Activities. In the first three quarters of 2021, the cumulative year-on-year increase stood at 7.8%.
Compared to the previous quarter, at constant prices and once corrected for seasonal effects, sales increased by 3.8% in the third quarter of 2021.
Within the Market Services sector, there was a generalised year-on year increase in real sales (at constant prices), except in Information and Communication, where there was a decrease of 0.8%. Of particular note among the sectors that experienced growth were Transport and storage (16.3%) and Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services (12.7%). Coming next, albeit with lower growth, were Hospitality(8.9%) and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (3.6%).
In comparison with the second quarter of 2021, sales increased in the following sectors: Transport and Storage (5.1%), Hospitality (2.9%) and Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services (2.0%). In contrast, sales in the Information and Communications and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities sectors, were down by 1.2% and 0.6%, respectively.
By province, year-on-year growth was generalised. In Bizkaia the sales index was 10.9% higher than in the third quarter of 2020, in Álava it was up 7.7% and, lastly, in Gipuzkoa the year-on-year increase stood at 7.4%.
In terms of the cumulative variation up to the third quarter of 2021, Álava also led growth, with a cumulative increase of 10.2%. In Gipuzkoa the cumulative year-on-year variation in the last three quarters of 2021 stood at 8.5% and in Bizkaia at 7.0%.
The index of people employed in Market Services as a whole for the Basque Country fell by 0.3% in the third quarter of 2021 in year-on-year terms. In relation to the previous quarter the decrease stood at 0.7%.

Included as persons employed considered in this and other short-term indices, are those covered by an ERTE (Temporary Labour Force Adjustment Plan), following the definition of persons employed indicated by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) in its manual Methodology of Short Term Business Statistics.
The models used in the correction of calendar effects and deseasonalisation of the series include the effect of COVID-19 on the variables studied, following the recommendations of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) in its methodological note Guidance on Time Series Treatment in the context of the COVID-19 crisis.
