Activity in the Construction sector in the Basque Country grew by 14.8% in the second quarter of 2021
The Building sub-sector increased by 16.0% and the Civil Works sub-sector was up 7.1%
Construction activity in the Basque Country registered, in nominal terms, a year-on-year upturn of 14.8% in the second quarter of 2021, once corrected for calendar effects, according to EUSTAT data.
The year-on-year increase in the Construction sector this quarter was primarily due to the performance of Building , which was up 16.0%, given that Civil Works experienced a more moderate year-on-year rise of 7.1%.
In the year-to-date, the first quarter of 2021, the sector posted a 6.3% increase in its activity in relation to the same period of 2020. The cumulative year-on-year variation rate for the year-to-date was 6.9% in the Building sub-sector and 2.1% in that of Civil Works.
Comparing the activity of the sector in this second quarter of 2021 with that of the previous quarter, once corrected for seasonal effects, revealed a decrease of 1.0%. Building showed a negative quarter-on-quarter evolution of 0.9% and Civil Works fell in relation to the previous quarter by 1.8%.
Finally, and in deseasonalised terms, the number of people employed in the Construction sector in the second quarter of 2021 rose by 1.1% in respect of the first quarter of 2021.

Included as persons employed considered in this and other short-term indices, are those covered by an ERTE (Temporary Labour Force Adjustment Plan), following the definition of persons employed indicated by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) in its manual Methodology of Short Term Business Statistics.
The models used in the correction of calendar effects and deseasonalisation of the series include the effect of COVID-19 on the variables studied, following the recommendations of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) in its methodological note Guidance on Time Series Treatment in the context of the COVID-19 crisis.
