Computing activities employed over 15,000 people in 2019 in the Basque Country and turned over 1,435 million euros

Company size oscillated between Property Activities, which employed an average of 1.7 people per establishment, and Ancillary Transport Activities, with 10.3 people

The turnover of Computing Activities in the Basque Country was nearly 1,435 million euros, with the sector employing 15,289 people in its 2066 establishments in 2019, according to data prepared by Eustat.

These figures entailed an increase of 11% in employment compared to 2017, the last year for which information is available, and 11.1% in turnover for the two years referred to, in which the number of establishments also increased by 4.6%.

In terms of territorial distribution, Bizkaia accounted for 63.9% of turnover and 65.9% of employment; Álava, 18.3% of turnover and 12.9% of employment, and Gipuzkoa contributed 7.9% and 21.2%, respectively.

After Computing Activities, within the heterogenous group of activities included under Sundry Services, Ancillary Transport Activities was second in terms of importance as regards volume of employment, with its 1056 establishments employing 10,904 people, and first in terms of turnover, with a figure of 2,908 million euros in 2019.

In addition, compared to 2017, growth in employment of 7.7% and in turnover of 7.7% can be observed, despite a 2.5% reduction in establishments.

Furthermore, and as is the case for the remaining activities, Bizkaia is the province that most contributed to this activity, accounting for 55.6% of establishments, 54.2% of employment and 56.8% of turnover for the Basque Country overall 13.7% of establishments corresponded to Álava, along with 19% of employment and 13.2% of turnover. In the same order, Gipuzkoa contributed 30.7%, 26.8% and 29.9%, respectively.

An activity that carried significant weight in the Sundry Services group was Sport and Recreational Activities, given that it employed 10,366 people in the Basque Country. In 2019 its 1,700 establishments turned over 11.2% more than in 2017, reaching a value exceeding 835 million euros, whereas employment rose by 9.3% and the number of establishments by 11.9%.

Within this sector, Bizkaia represented 50.1% of establishments, 46.4% of employment and 39.9% of turnover, an identical proportion to that corresponding to Gipuzkoa, a province whose employment represented 34.1% and which absorbed 32.8% of establishments in the Basque Country. The province of Álava accounted for 17.1% of the total of establishments destined towards Sport and Recreational Activities, concentrating 19.6% of employment and generating 20.2% of the total turnover for the Autonomous Region in this activity.

Next to Sport Activities in terms of size was Cultural Activities, which in 2019 employed 7394 people in 2607 establishments. Its turnover stood at over one billion euros, which involved a considerable increase of 32.3% in relation to 2017, considerably higher than the increases in number of establishments and employment, which were 6.9% and 7%, respectively.

A provincial distribution of establishments indicates that 50.3% were found in Bizkaia, 36.9% in Gipuzkoa and 12.9% in Álava. It was a distribution similar to that observed for employment, 48.3%, 38.9% and 12.8%, respectively. The differences as regards turnover were somewhat greater: 55.9% for Bizkaia, 35.5% for Gipuzkoa and 8.7% for Álava.

For their part, Property Activities reached a turnover figure of 685.6 million euros, with some three thousand establishments employing over five thousand people in 2019. However, while the number of establishments fell by 3.2% compared to 2017, both employment, and to a greater extent sales, saw improvements in their figures of 2.8% and 8.9%, respectively.

For this activity, 57.2% of employment was in Bizkaia, 30.6% in Gipuzkoa and 12.2% in Álava. These provincial contributions differed slightly in the case of sales as Álava saw its participation rise to 14.5%, whereas those in Gipuzkoa were limited to 26.6%. With a proportion similar to that of its employment, Bizkaia accounted for the remaining 58.9%.

The remaining activities included in Sundry Activities each employed at least five thousand people, with the exception of Other Personal Services, which provided 14,223 jobs.

Other Personal Services includes diverse activities such as Hairdressing and Other Beauty Treatments, Washing and Cleaning of Clothing, and Physical Maintenance Activities, among others. 6,753 Basque Country establishments were inscribed in this activity group, with a turnover of 538.8 million euros.

Their evolution in the two years in question, 2019 and 2017, was moderately positive, with growth ranging from 2.2% in the number of establishments to 3.8% in employment, and 2.6% in turnover.

Despite not exceeding the aforementioned limit of five thousand jobs, a sector worthy of mention for its positive performance as regards turnover is that of Postal and Courier Activities. In effect, between 2017 and 2019 the sector saw an improvement in sales of almost 15% (14.8%), whereas employment, in comparison, only increased by 6.4%.

Equally noteworthy is the growth in employment registered in activities relating to Publishing, Audiovisuals, Cinema, Radio and Television, of 6.9% and 6.6%, respectively.

Lastly, in contrast, activities relating to Auxiliary Financial Services and Repair of Computers and Other Articles saw negative growth rates in employment, of -0.9% for the former and -2.5% the latter, although both managed to maintain and even slightly improve their turnover figure (0.7% and 1.6%, respectively).

A final indicator of interest from the perspective of employment dimension is the average number of people employed per establishment.

In this regard, the greatest atomisation of employment corresponded to Property Activities, with 1.7% people employed per establishment, followed by Auxiliary Financial Services, 1.9 people per establishment, and Repair of Computers and Other Articles, 2.1 people. On the other hand, the greatest concentration of employment per establishment occurred in Ancillary Transport Activities, with 10.3 people per establishment. At a certain distance from this figure were Computing Activities, employing an average of 7.4 people, and Sport and Recreational Activities, with 6.1.
