The GDP of the Basque Country rose by 0.2% and employment increased by 0.5% in the first quarter of 2021

Compared to the first quarter of 2020, GDP was down 2.9%

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Basque Country in the first quarter of 2021 increased by 0.2% in relation to the previous quarter, according to estimates for the Advance Quarterly Accounts made by EUSTAT. This quarter-on-quarter advance is more moderate than that estimated in the last quarter of 2020, standing at 0.5%, but is the third consecutive quarter registering positive rates.

In contrast, with respect to the same quarter of the previous year, GDP in the Basque Country was down 2.9%. For the last quarter of 2020 the estimated year-on-year decline was much sharper (-7.6%).

Employment, measured as full-time equivalent jobs, rose by 0.5% compared to the previous quarter. The fourth quarter of the previous year remained unchanged in quarter-on-quarter terms.

In relation to the same quarter of the previous year, on the other hand, there was an estimated fall of 2.1%. The previous year-on-year decrease, estimated in the last quarter of 2020, was more significant (-6.3%).

On 4 June Eustat will publish the disaggregated estimates of GDP and Employment in its Quarterly Accounts for the first quarter of 2021, after incorporating the relevant information that was not available when these Advance Quarterly Accounts were prepared.
