Education expenditure per student in public education centres in the Basque Country increased by 9.8% between 2015 and 2018
Education expenditure per student increased at all educational levels
Education expenditure per student in public education centres stood at 5,979 euros in 2018, up 9.8% with respect to 2015, according to EUSTAT data. The total amount of education expenditure stood at 1,828 million euros with an increase of 7.1%. When expenditure on complementary activities and services and capital expenditure is added, the total expenditure stood at 2,061 million euros.
Most of the expenditure in public centres, 95%, was used to defray current activities, and the remaining 5% was spent on investments, percentages that remain the same in relation to 2015. For its part, 93% of the 1,957 million euros in current expenditure went directly on education; the most relevant chapter was that of personnel expenditure, which accounted for 89% of spending in this area; 0.2% on complementary activities and 6.3% on complementary services mainly focused on school meals and transport.
According to the type of education taught, centres teaching pre-university level accounted for 74% of total expenditure, whilst university accounted for 21%, and specialised education centres the remaining 5%. Hardly any differences were observed between 2018 and the preceding years.
Education expenditure per school unit in public centres stood at €92,565 for infant education, whilst €92,846 were spent on primary education. With respect to secondary education, €135,584 were spent on Compulsory Secondary Education, €200,434 on Upper Secondary Education and €189,230 and €169,408 on Intermediate and Advanced Level Vocational Training, respectively.
Education expenditure per student rose to €5,962 for Infant Education, whilst for Primary Education this figure was €5,685. In terms of secondary education, this figure stood at €7,770 for Compulsory Secondary Education (E.S.O.), €8,339 for Upper Secondary Education, and €10,445 and €8,586 were spent per student on Intermediate and Advanced Level Professional Training, respectively. As regards Arts education, which includes Languages, Music, Dance and Arts and Trades, this expenditure stood at €1,529 per student. Finally, expenditure per student for university education was €8,426.
Education expenditure per unit increased by 5.5% in 2018 in comparison with 2015, while per student it rose by 9.8%, although it is true that this latter includes the level of university studies, whereas expenditure per unit is only calculated for educational levels prior to university.
Education expenditure per student increased at all levels. The greatest increase was in Advanced Level Vocational Training (17.9%), followed by Arts Education (15.8%), University Education (11.0%) and Infant Education (10.4%); all above the average (9.8%).
The total income for public centres in 2018 stood at 2,085 million euros, with 95% corresponding to current income and 5% to capital income. The main components of current income were public subsidies, which accounted for 92.4% of the total. 6.8% of current income came from private sources, mainly through education fees (2.8%) and through complementary activities and services (3.8%).
