There was a slight decrease in the number of students enrolled in non-university education in 2018

32% of students received some type of grant from the Administration

There were 418,590 students enrolled in non-university education in the Basque Country over the 2018-19 academic year, down 0.2% on the previous academic year, according to data prepared by Eustat.

93% took General Education Courses and the remaining 7% were enrolled in Specialised Education. In both case the number of enrolments fell by 0.2% and 1.0%, respectively.

By province, half of all students in General Education studied in Bizkaia, 34% in Gipuzkoa and 16% in Álava. In the case of Specialised Education a certain provincial specialisation was observed, with the exception of Languages and Music, which were present in all the provinces. 63% of Plastic Art is located in Álava and Drama is only available in Bizkaia. Elementary and professional dance training is offered in Álava and advanced training in Bizkaia. Finally, Sports students are concentrated in Bizkaia.

With regard to the governing body, in General Education, students were distributed equally between public and private centres, except for Intermediate-Level Professional Training studies where six of every ten enrolments was at a public centre, and Adult Education, where almost all enrolments were at public centres. In the case of Basic Vocational Training, however, 72% of students opted for privately owned centres. For Specialised Education, the majority of students were registered at public centres: 100% in Languages, Dance and Dramatic art, and more than 70% in the other courses.

Enrolments in Compulsory Secondary Education were up 2.3%

In General Education as a whole there was a 0.2% drop in enrolments. On the positive side there was an increase in Compulsory Secondary Education students (2.3%) and a decrease in Infant Education (-2.0%). On the other hand, for the fourth consecutive year, enrolment in adult education continued to post negative rates, specifically, there were 1,324 fewer enrolments, down almost 10%.

In Specialised Education, with 295 fewer enrolments, there was a 1.0% drop in student numbers. The most significant decrease occurred in Languages, with 493 fewer enrolments. Of particular note was the 32% increase in sports education.

46% of the total amount of grants was awarded to primary school students

In the 2018-19 academic year, the amount of grants and aid awarded by the Public Administration of the Basque Country increased to 53 million euros, and benefited a total of 128,364 students, 32% of the total.

Public centres accounted for approximately two thirds of grants, benefitting earlier and basic educational levels. Grants to students enrolled in private centres reached a total of 19 million.

An equal proportion of girls and boys in Upper Secondary Education and a stronger male presence in Vocational Training

On completion of compulsory education, 67% of students chose to go into Upper Secondary Education, compared to 22% who opted for an Intermediate Level Vocational Training module.

There were notable gender difference with regard to Upper Secondary Education and Intermediate Level Vocational Training, given that the same proportion of girls as boys studied Upper Secondary, whereas in Intermediate Level Vocational Training over two thirds of students are boys.

There are also differences by gender in the choice of specialisations in Upper Secondary Education and Vocational Training. As regards Upper Secondary, a higher presence of women is observed in all the options, except in Sciences (48%). There is a significant percentage of women enrolled in Arts and Humanities, 70%, followed by Social Sciences, with 60%.

In Intermediate Level Vocational Training, of the twenty available families, there was a higher presence of women in seven of them: Personal Image (90%); Textile, Garments and Leather and Socio-Cultural and Community Services, with 80% in both cases; Healthcare (75%), Administration and Management (60%); Food and Beverage and Chemical Industries with 60%, in both cases. The remaining courses are clearly male-dominated, except Business and Marketing, where there was parity.

In the area of non-university higher education, 21,468 students enrolled in Advanced Level Vocational Training, slightly down on the previous academic year (-0.2%). Of the total, 36% were women.

As regards the choice of academic families, as occurred in Intermediate Level Vocational Training, it is marked according to gender, with more women opting for the sectors related to personal image, caring for people, food and Textile and Garments.

Methodological note: Practically all the private centres in the Basque Country are subsidised by the Department of Education, although not all their educational levels are subsidised.
