SERVICE SECTOR INDEX. OTHER MARKET SERVICES. IV/2019

Sales in Market Services were up 1% in the fourth quarter of 2019 in the Basque Country

Sales in market services rose by 0.7% in 2019

The sectors that come under Other Market Services (hereinafter Market Services) registered a 1.0% increase in sales compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year, in real terms, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous quarter, these services were up 0.2% at constant prices and once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.

Within Market Services, the Sales Index for the Hotel Management & Catering sector increased by 3.5%; for Professional, Scientific, and Technical Activities it was up 3.2%; in the Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services sector it rose by 0.5%, and in Information & Communications it increased by 0.1%, in turn, the sales index was down in the Transport & Storage sector (-1.7%).

By province, in Álava there was an increase of 5.0% and in Gipuzkoa there was a rise of 1.8%, but in Bizkaia there was a drop of 0.3%, all compared to the fourth quarter of 2018 and once the price effect had been discounted.

The index of employed people in the Basque Country, in the year-on-year period, was up 0.6% in Other Market Services.

ANNUAL BALANCE 2019

In the year overall, sales in Other Market Services increased by 0.7% in real terms. By sector, sales in Hotel Management & Catering rose by 2.2%, in Professional, Scientific & Technical Activities they were up 2.0%, and sales in Transport & Storage increased by 1.0%. On the other hand, sales in Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services were down 3.4% and in Information & Communications they fell by 1.0%.

Market Services showed an upward trend in two out of the three provinces: in Álava, sales in these services were up 1.7%, and in Gipuzkoa they rose by 2.2%, while in Bizkaia they were down 0.4%, all at constant prices.

The number of people employed in Market Services fell by 0.4% in 2019.
