Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country fell by 3.4% in October 2019
The accumulated rate for the first ten months of the year closed with 1.0% growth
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country in October 2019 experienced a year-on-year downturn at constant prices of 3.4% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to September, sales were up 0.5% in deseasonalised terms.
Sales of food products were down 1.2%, and sales corresponding to other items decreased by 7.7%, with respect to the same month of the previous year, once corrected for calendar effects.
Compared to the previous month, September 2019, food sales increased by 0.8% and sales of other products were down 0.2%, at constant prices and in deseasonalised terms.
By province, there was a decrease of 3.7% in Bizkaia, a drop of 3.2% in Gipuzkoa and a fall of 2.6% in Álava compared to the same month of the previous year, all at constant prices and corrected for calendar effects.
In the accumulated period of January to October 2019, the Sales index in large stores and food chains registered 1.0% growth, an increase that was produced both in food sales (1.4%) and in sales of other products (0.1%). There was also a positive trend in the three provinces: Álava increased in the year-to-date by 0.5%, Bizkaia by 1.1%, and Gipuzkoa by 1.0%, all at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country fell by 1.2% compared to the same month of the previous year and was down 1.8% on September 2019. In the accumulated period of January to October the number of people employed was up 1.9% on the same period of 2018.
