Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.5% in August 2019
The accumulated total for the first eight months of the year closed with 2.0% growth
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country in August 2019 experienced a year-on-year upturn at constant prices of 1.5% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to July, sales were down 0.5% in deseasonalised terms.
Sales of food products were up 2.5%, and sales corresponding to other items fell by 0.4%, with respect to the same month of the previous year.
Compared to the previous month, July 2019, food sales decreased by 0.3% and sales of other products were down by 0.9%, at constant prices and in deseasonalised terms.
By province, in Bizkaia there was a 2.7% increase, and in Álava there was a 0.9% rise, whereas in Gipuzkoa the number remained unchanged, compared to the same month of the previous year, all at constant prices and corrected for calendar effects.
In the accumulated period of January to August 2019, the Sales index in large stores and food chains registered 2.0% growth, an increase that was produced both in food sales (2.2%) and in sales of other products (1.6%). There was also a positive trend in the three provinces: Álava increased in the year-to-date by 1.3%, Bizkaia by 2.3%, and Gipuzkoa by 1.7%, all at constant prices and in homogeneous terms of the working calendar.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.1% compared to the same month of the previous year, but was down 0.2% compared to July, in deseasonalised terms. In the accumulated period of January to August the number of people employed was up 2.3% on the same period of 2018.
