Press Release 30/07/2019
ADVANCE QUARTERLY ACCOUNTS (ACET). II/2019
The GDP of the Basque Country maintained a year-on-year growth of 2.3% in the second quarter of 2019
Employment creation sustained a year-on-year growth of 1.7%
The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Basque Country posted an increase of 2.3% in the second quarter of 2019, compared to the second quarter of 2018, according to estimates for the Advance Quarterly Accounts made by EUSTAT. This year-on-year increase is identical to the growth estimated in the previous quarter.
Once corrected for calendar and seasonal effects, in quarter-on-quarter terms, the estimated GDP rose by 0.6% compared to the first quarter of 2019, one tenth lower than that estimated in the previous quarter.
From the perspective of supply, the positive year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter growth in the second quarter of 2019 was due to the good aggregated performance of all sectors, except for the primary sector. Of particular note in this quarter was the slight recovery in industry and the deceleration of the growth in the Construction sector.
Employment, measured as full-time equivalent jobs, increased by 1.7% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, one tenth lower than the growth observed in the previous quarter. Quarter-on-quarter growth was estimated at 0.4%, one tenth higher than the increase in the previous quarter.
On 20 September 2019 EUSTAT will publish the disaggregated estimates of GDP and Employment in its Quarterly Accounts for the second quarter of 2019, after incorporating the relevant information that was not available when these Advance Quarterly Accounts were prepared.
