Industrial activity in the Basque Country rose by 0.8% in June 2019
The industrial production index saw growth of 0.7% in the first six months of 2019
Industrial production of the Basque Country in June 2019 was up by 0.8% compared to the same month of 2018, in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. The balance for the first six months of 2019 saw growth of 0.7% on the same period of 2018.
Compared to the previous month, May 2019, the industrial production of the Basque Country fell by 0.4%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.
The performance of the index in June 2019 compared to June 2018 registered positive and negative results in the major industrial sectors. Capital Goods were down by 0.2% and Intermediate Goods fell by 0.1%, whereas Energy rose by 4.8% and Consumer Goods as a whole rose by 2.6%. Within these, Consumer Durables, which were up 15.2%, determined the rate of growth, since Consumer Non-Durables remained stable (0.0%).
The month-on-month variation, June 2019 on May 2019, registered distinct trends for the major industrial sectors. Energy rose by 2.8%, but Capital Goods fell 1.6% and Intermediate Goods were down by by 1.1%. Consumer Goods as a whole decreased by 0.4%, since Consumer Non-Durables and Consumer Durables posted drops of 1.2% and 2.7%, respectively.
Among the largest sectors in Basque industry, those that saw the most significant growth in the month of June 2019 with regards to year-on-year variations were: Electricity, Gas & Steam, with an increase of 27.1%, Electrical Material & Equipment, which rose by 7.9% and Rubber and Plastics, up by 1.7%.
In contrast, the largest decreases occurred in the sectors of: Transport Material, which posted a year-on-year drop of 5.0%, Timber, Paper & Graphic Arts, which fell by 3.0% and Food, Beverages & Tobacco, down 2.5%.
By province, the year-on-year performance of the Industrial Production Index for the month of June was positive in Bizkaia, where it rose by 2.5%, and in Gipuzkoa, with an increase of 1.6%, but in Álava it registered a fall of 3.0%.
