Industrial activity in the Basque Country fell by 2.0% in July 2019

The Industrial Production Index saw overall growth of 0.3% in the first seven months of 2019

Industrial production of the Basque Country in July 2019 was down by 2.0% compared to the same month of 2018, in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. The balance for the first seven months of 2019 saw growth of 0.3% on the same period of 2018.

Compared to the previous month, June 2019, the industrial production of the Basque Country fell by 2.1%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.

The performance of the index in July 2019 compared to June 2018 registered positive and negative results in the major industrial sectors. Energy was up 8.5%, but Intermediate Goods fell by 4.0%, Capital Goods dropped 2.2% and Consumer Goods as a whole were down 3.5%. Within these, Consumer Durables fell by 8.0% and Consumer Non-durables were down 2.4%.

The month-on-month variation, July 2019 on June 2019, registered distinct trends for the major industrial sectors. Energy rose by 1.9%, but Capital Goods fell 3.3% and Intermediate Goods were down 1.2%. Consumer Goods as a whole were down 2.5%, mainly due to the 10.9% drop posted by Consumer Non-Durables, as although Consumer Durables were also down, it was to a lesser extent (-0.5%).

Among the largest sectors in Basque industry, those that saw growth in July 2019 with regards to year-on-year variations were: Electricity, Gas & Steam, with an increase of 26.8% and Electrical Material & Equipment, which rose by 3.8%.

In contrast, the largest decreases occurred in the sectors of: Rubber & Plastics, which posted a year-on-year drop of 5.9%, Metallurgy & Metal Products, which fell by 4.3% and Food, Beverages & Tobacco, down 2.7%.

By province, the year-on-year performance of the Industrial Production Index for the month of July showed a downward trend in all three: it fell 3.4% in Gipuzkoa, 2.0% in Álava and 0.6% in Bizkaia.
