LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY, MAY 2019
The sales index of large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 3.7% in May 2019
The accumulated total for the first five months of the year closed with 2.4% growth
Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country in May 2019 experienced a year-on-year upturn at constant prices of 3.7% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to April, sales were up 0.6% in deseasonalised terms.
Sales of food products were up 4.4%, and sales corresponding to other items rose by 2.3%, with respect to the same month of the previous year.
Compared to the previous month, April 2019, food sales increased by 0.3% and sales of other items rose by 1.2%, at constant prices and in deseasonalised terms.
By regions, in Gipuzkoa there was an increase of 4.5% and in Bizkaia and Álava a rise of 3.3%, in both cases, compared to the same month of the previous year, all at constant prices and corrected for calendar effects.
The number of people employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 1.6% compared to the same month of the previous year, but was down 0.4% in respect of April, in deseasonalised terms. In the accumulated period of January to May the number of people employed was up 2.8% on the same period of 2018.
