LARGE STORES AND FOOD CHAINS TRADE INDEX OF THE BASQUE COUNTRY, JANUARY 2019

Sales in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 3.9% in January 2019

With regards to the previous month they were up 0.8%

Sales at large stores and food chains in the Basque Country in January 2019 experienced a year-on-year upturn at constant prices of 3.9% in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. Compared to December 2018, sales were up 0.8% in deseasonalised terms.

Sales of food products at large stores and food chains reflected a rise of 2.5%, and sales corresponding to other items registered an increase of 6.1%, with respect to the same month of the previous year.

There were rises in all three provinces: Bizkaia saw an increase of 4.4%, in Gipuzkoa there was a rise of 3.7% and in Álava sales were up 2.4%, in all cases over the year-on-year period.

Compared to the previous month, December 2018, food sales increased by 0.6% and sales of other items rose by 1.2% at constant prices and in deseasonalised terms.

By province, compared to the previous month, December 2018, at constant prices and in deseasonalised terms, both Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia saw a rise of 0.8%, and Álava was up 1.2%.

The number of individuals employed in large stores and food chains in the Basque Country rose by 2.4% compared to the same month of the previous year, but was down 0.5% on the previous month, in deseasonalised terms.

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE

From January 2019 the series corrected for calendar effects and the series adjusted for seasonal effects since the 2015 base year are obtained using the software JDemetra+ 2.2.1, following the Eurostat recommendations for carrying out seasonal and calendar adjustments in the official statistics of the European Union.
