Alto Deba, Duranguesado and Llanada alavesa have the highest percentage of innovative companies with 10 or more employees in their respective provinces
Spending was concentrated in the regions that include the capitals
The percentage of companies with 10 or more employees with innovation in 2016 was 35.6% in the Basque Country, with a notably larger presence in the regions of Alto Deba (46.2%) in Gipuzkoa, Duranguesado (39.3%) in Bizkaia and Llanada alavesa (31.9%) in Álava, according to Eustat data.
There were other regions above the Basque Country average: Goierri with 42.4% of companies with 10 or more employees as innovative, Bajo Deba with 41.5%, Tolosa with 40.5%, Donostialdea with 39.0%, Plentzia-Mungia with 37.1% and Markina-Ondarroa with 35.9%.
As regards the regions with the lowest percentage of innovating companies, attention should be drawn to Rioja Alavesa (26.9%), Encartaciones (31.0%) and Bajo Bidasoa (31.9%).
As regards the Basque capitals, Donostia / San Sebastián took the lead with 40.6% of innovating companies, followed by Bilbaowith 33.3%, and Vitoria-Gasteiz with 31.8% of innovating companies with 10 or more employees in 2016.
In relation to spending on innovation activities in companies of 10 or more employees, the highest spending was concentrated in the regions that include the capitals. Nevertheless, the degree of concentration is different, especially in Gipuzkoa. Both in Álava and in Bizkaia, the regions which include the capitals (Llanada Alavesa and Gran Bilbao, respectively) account for around 87.3% and 77.5% of their province's spending, while this proportion is less in Gipuzkoa, with Donostialdea representing 43.9% of total spending on innovation.
In Álava, out of spending of 359.8 million, 314.2 million was in Llanada Alavesa and in Bizkaia, out of 1,073.6 million, 832.4 million was spent in Gran Bilbao. However, in Gipuzkoa, this proportion was lower, out of 690.6 million provincial spending, 303.5 million pertained to Donostialdea. Also worthy of mention are the regions of Duranguesado in Bizkaia (144.6 million) and Goierri in Gipuzkoa (128.5 million), where spending exceeded 100 million.
As regards the capitals, expenditure on innovative activities reached 306.2 million in Vitoria-Gasteiz, 267.9 million in Bilbao and 187.5 million in Donostia, representing 85.1%, 25.0% and 27.1% of provincial expenditure, respectively.
