Retail sector sales rose by 2.7% in the Basque Country in the third quarter of 2017
Not including petrol stations, retail trade grew 3.1% at constant prices
The retail trade sector of the Basque Country registered a 2.7% rise in nominal sales in the third quarter of 2017 with regards to the same period of the previous year, once the price effect had been discounted, according to data provided by Eustat. Sales in the sector, not including service stations, were up by 3.1% in year-on-year terms.
With respect to the previous quarter, the sales index was up 1.2% in real terms, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.
By sector, food products registered a rise of 1.8% in sales in the third quarter of 2017, retail trade of other products saw a rise of 4.2% and sales of automotive fuel dropped by 1.4%, all with regards to the third quarter in 2016 and at constant prices.
In the retail food sector, specialised trade was down by 3.0%, as non-specialised trade in mainly food products rose by 4.3%.
In retail trade of other products there were positive variations in non-specialised trade in mainly other products, which were up 11.2%, in specialised trade of other consumer goods, which posted a rise of 9.3%, and in specialised trade in household equipment which increased by 3.1%, but specialised trade of personal equipment dropped by 1.6%, all at constant prices.
By province, increases in year-on-year sales were posted in the three provinces. In Bizkaia it rose by 3.1%, in Álava it went up by 2.4% and in Gipuzkoa it increased by 2.3%, all in real terms. Compared to the previous quarter, Álava registered a rise of 1.5%, and there was an increase of 1.3% in Bizkaia and 0.9% in Gipuzkoa.
The number of people employed in the retail trade sector in the Basque Country overall in the third quarter of 2017 was up by 0.8% with respect to the same quarter of the previous year and was up by 0.1% on the second quarter of 2017.
