Industrial activity in the Basque Country rose by 2.6% in October 2017
The Industrial Production Index saw a growth of 2.7% in the first ten months of 2017
The Industrial production of the Basque Country in October 2017 was up by 2.6% compared to the same month of 2016, in homogenous terms of the working calendar, according to Eustat data. The balance for the first ten months of 2017 saw growth of 2.7% on the same period of 2016.
Compared to the previous month, September 2017, the industrial production of the Basque Country fell by 0.7%, once seasonal effects had been corrected.
There were different performances in the index of the major industrial sectors in October 2017 compared to October 2016. Intermediate Goods increased by 5.7%, Energy grew by 1.1% and Capital Goods were up by 0.8%; however, Consumer Goods fell by 1.1%. Within these, Consumer Non-Durables, which were down 4.3%, determined the drop, as Consumer Durables were up 7.6%.
The month-on-month variation from October 2017 on September 2017 was only positive for Intermediate Goods, which grew by 0.1%. Energy fell by 2.4%, Capital Goods were down by 0.9% and Consumer Goods, as a whole, decreased by 2.8%. Within these Consumer Non-durables fell by 2.9% and Consumer durables dropped by 2.5%.
Among the largest sectors in Basque industry, those that saw growth in the month of October 2017 with regards to year-on-year variations were: Rubber & Plastics with 13.7%, Machinery and Equipment with 7.1% and Metallurgy & Metal Products, with a rise of 7.0%. On the other hand, the most significant decreases occurred in the sectors of Timber paper and graphic arts, which fell by 8.5%, Electrical Material & Equipment, which was down by 4.8%, and Food, Beverages & Tobacco, which dropped by 1.8%.
By province, the year-on-year performance of the Industrial Production Index for the month of October showed an upward trend in all three: it rose by 4.9% in Gipuzkoa, by 1.8% in Álava and by 0.8% in Bizkaia.
