Finishing Works and Installations accounted for 54% of employment and 41% of value added for the construction industry in the Basque Country in 2015

Companies with fewer than 20 staff accounted for 76% of employment in construction and generated 70.8% of total turnover

In 2015, the categories of Finishing Works, Electrical Installations, Plumbing and Other Installations accounted for 54% of employment and 41% of value added for the construction industry in the Basque Country, according to data prepared by Eustat.

Compared to 2014, net turnover fell by 2.8%, as did the number of people employed, with a net reduction of 1,492 jobs compared to the previous year. Staffing costs fell by virtually the same amount (2.6%). In terms of investment, there was a reduction of 36.8%, following an increase of 43.5% in 2014.

At the provincial level, in 2015 net turnover for the construction industry experienced a decrease - albeit of differing proportions - in each of the three provinces. In Bizkaia the reduction was minimal compared to the previous year, while the equivalent figure was 2.4% for Álava and 6.8% for Gipuzkoa.

An analysis by establishment size shows that companies employing up to 19 staff comprised some 76% of the total number of people employed in construction, and generated 70.8% of the total turnover. Companies with 20 to 49 staff accounted for 12% of total employment and 13.8% of turnover. The next stratum - companies with 50 to 99 staff - accounted for 7% of turnover and 5.6% of total employment. Finally, companies with 100 or more staff generated 8.4% of total turnover and provided employment to 6.3% of people in work.

If we analyse the distribution of employed individuals and the generation of value added at factor cost according to the different activity groups within construction, then it is worth mentioning that Electrical Installations, Plumbing and Other Installations made up nearly a third (31%) of the total number of people employed in construction, and generated 26% of added value. The next activity to employ the most individuals within construction was Finishing Works, which encompassed 23% of total employment, generating a value of 15%. In third place was Building Construction, with 18% of total employment and 22% of value added. It is also worth highlighting the productivity of Property Development, which contributed 15% of value added and employed 5% of the total number of individuals working in construction.

Methodological note: In 2015 improvements were made to the processes for estimating the figures for the industry. In order to enable comparison, the variables for 2014 have been recalculated accordingly.
