Cantábrica Alavesa, Alto Deba and Duranguesado have the highest percentage of innovative companies with 10 or more employees
Spending in Álava and Bizkaia was concentrated in the capitals, while in Gipuzkoa it was more distributed
The percentage of companies with 10 or more employees with innovation in 2015 was 37.2% in the Basque Country, with a notably larger presence in the regions of Cantábrica Alavesa (43.2%) in Álava, Duranguesado (41.3%) in Bizkaia and Alto Deba (41.8%) in Gipuzkoa, according to data prepared by Eustat.
In addition to these three regions, the following regions also stood out with respect to the Basque Country average: The rest of Álava with 40.8% of companies with 10 or more employees as innovative, Tolosa with 40.5%, Goierri with 39.3%, Arratia-Nervión with 39.0%, Plentzia-Mungia with 38.9% and Bajo Deba with 38.3%.
As regards the regions with the lowest percentage of innovating companies, attention should be drawn to Rioja Alavesa (31.5%), Markina-Ondarroa (32.8%) and Bajo Bidasoa (33.8%).
As regards the Basque capitals, Donostia / San Sebastián took the lead with 38.7% of innovating companies, followed by Vitoria-Gasteiz with 36.5%, and Bilbao with 36.0% of innovating companies with 10 or more employees in 2015.
In relation to spending on innovation activities in companies of 10 or more employees, the highest spending was concentrated in the regions that include the capitals. Nevertheless, the degree of concentration is different, especially in Gipuzkoa. Both in Álava and in Bizkaia, the regions which include the capitals (Llanada Alavesa and Gran Bilbao, respectively) account for around 86.4% and 79.0% of their province's spending, while this proportion is less in Gipuzkoa, with Donostialdea representing 46.0% of total spending on innovation.
In Álava, out of 384.7 million in expenditure, 332.5 was in Llanada Alavesa and in Bizkaia, out of 1,033.8 million, 816.6 million was spent in Gran Bilbao. However, in Gipuzkoa, out of 661.6 million, 304.2 million was spent in Donostialdea. Also worthy of mention are the regions of Duranguesado in Bizkaia (133.2 million) and Alto Deba in Gipuzkoa (104.3 million), where spending exceeded 100 million.
As regards the capitals, expenditure on innovative activities reached 324.7 million in Vitoria-Gasteiz, 280.8 million in Bilbao and 192.3 million in Donostia, representing 84.4%, 27.2% and 29.1% of provincial expenditure, respectively.
