The Construction sector in the Basque Country grew by 0.9% in the fourth quarter of 2016
Building followed with 3.2% growth, whereas Civil Works contracted by 12.2%
Construction activity in the Basque Country registered a year-on-year nominal upturn of 0.9% in the fourth quarter of 2016, in homogeneous terms of the working calendar, according to EUSTAT data.
The increase in the Construction sector in this quarter was due to the positive performance of the Building sub-sector, which experienced a year-on-year upturn of 3.2%, since the Civil Works sub-sector contracted by 12.2%.
Once corrected for seasonal effects, in this fourth quarter 2016, the Construction sector shrank by 0.4% on the third quarter of 2016, with decreases in both the Building sub-sector, which saw a 0.3% decline, and the Civil Works sub-sector, with a 0.7% drop.
Employment in the Construction sector experienced a decrease of 0.1% in the fourth quarter of 2016 compared to the third quarter of 2016.
Annual balance
In 2016 overall, the Construction Index posted a rise of 2.2% on the previous year, but with very different results in its two sub-sectors: Building rose by 4.6%, with larger increases than those in 2015, whereas Civil Works saw negative rates, with a drop of 11.8% compared to 2015.
