Alto Deba and Donostia/San Sebastián are the region and regional capital, respectively, with the highest the percentage of innovating companies with 10 or more employees
The percentage of companies with 10 or more employees with innovation in 2014 was 37.1% in the Basque Country as a whole, with a notably larger presence in the regions of Gipuzkoa, according to data provided by Eustat.
Specifically, in five of the seven regions of Gipuzkoa, over 40% of companies with 10 or more employees were innovative in 2014: Alto Deba, 47.1%; Goierri, 44.0%; Tolosa, 41.8%; Urola Costa, 40.5%; and Donostialdea, 40.4%. In Álava the regions of Cantábrica Alavesa, with 42.2%, and the rest of Álava, with 40.7%, stood out in terms of the number of innovative companies of that size. Finally, in Bizkaia, it is the region of Duranguesado which had the highest percentage – although it is under 40% – with 38.9% of companies being innovative, followed by Plentzia-Mungia with 38.4% and Encartaciones, with 36.9%.
As regards the regions with the lowest percentage of innovating companies, attention should be drawn to Rioja Alavesa (30.9%) in Álava, Markina-Ondarroa (33.4%) in Bizkaia and Bajo Bidasoa (37.3%) in Gipuzkoa.
As regards the Basque capitals, Donostia/San Sebastián took the lead with 42.4% of innovating companies; the percentage in Vitoria-Gasteiz was more than six percentage points lower at 36.1%; and finally Bilbao, which had 33.7% of innovating companies with 10 or more employees in 2014.
