The sales index of the services in the Basque Country rose by 3.2% in year-on-year terms in the third quarter of 2015

Excluding trade, other services rose 7.3%

The service sector index of the Basque Country showed a 3.2% nominal rise in sales in the third quarter of 2015 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data.

Compared to the previous quarter, the sales index was up a nominal 1.2%, once any seasonal effects had been eliminated.

By sectors, the Trade sales index was up 0.6% in nominal terms, whilst for Other Services, which form part of the index, it was up 7.3% with regards to the same period of 2014.

Within Trade, the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles sector stood out for positive reasons, registering a nominal upturn of 15.9%. Retail Trade posted an upturn of 1.0%, whereas Wholesale Trade saw a fall of 1.9%.

Among the Other Services sectors, increases were seen in Scientific & Technical Professional Activities, with a rise of 12.9%; in Hotel Management & Catering, which saw a 8.4% upturn; in Transport & Storage, with an increase of 7.4%; and in the Information & Communications sector, which posted 6.1% growth, whereas there was a drop in Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services (2.6%).

By province, all three posted positive rates: Gipuzkoa registered an upturn of 3.4%; Bizkaia saw 3.3% growth; and Álava posted an increase of 2.8%.

In real terms, services sector sales rose by 3.9% in the third quarter once the price effect had been eliminated

Within Trade, the sales index of the third quarter of 2015 was up by 2.1%, and in Other Services there was an increase of 6.4%, with regards to the same quarter of 2014 and in constant terms.

The year-on-year trends within Trade were positive for the Sale & Repair of Motor Vehicles, which was up by 17.9%; the Retail Trade Index, which rose by 2.5%, whilst the Wholesale Trade Index decreased by 0.4%, all in real terms.

In the section Other Services, in constant euros, the index for the Scientific & Technical Professional Activities sector rose by 11.7%, and in Hotel Management & Catering it rose by 7.8%. The Transport & Storage sector grew by 6.9% and the Information & Communications was up 5.1%. For its part, the Administrative Activities & Auxiliary Services sector was down 4.3%.

The index of employed people in the overall services sector in the Basque Country in the third quarter of 2015 was down by 0.4% on the second quarter of 2015, and was up 1.0% with respect to the same quarter of 2014.
